The Black Molly is an all-black, short-finned hybrid variation of the Sailfin Molly. When young, they may have patches of silver or gold, but these will disappear as they age. You can tell males and females apart by looking at their anal fins. A pointed anal fin indicates a male, while a rounded one indicates a female. Males have larger dorsal fins, while females have a pregnancy spot.
These fish can adapt to different salt levels in an aquarium. With gradual acclimation, they can be kept in either a saltwater or freshwater aquarium. If kept in freshwater, it's recommended to add a teaspoon of salt per gallon to maintain their health. Additionally, it's important to densely plant the aquarium and have floating plants in the corners to promote rearing outside the breeding tank.
The Black Molly is a peaceful community fish that can coexist happily with other calm fish species. However, it does require a spawning box in a large breeding tank. Ideal tankmates for Black Molly fish include Guppies, Tetras, Danios, Gouramis, Platies, Swordtails, and even female Bettas.
Being a livebearer, it will live harmoniously with other livebearers. If you are looking to breed livebearers in your tank, ensure the tank has plenty of plants where the fry can hide.
